The design inspiration for the Spiral House grows out of the contradiction of grounded and floating. The designer divided the space into two realms: A grounded public realm of the main living space anchored to the edge of the dramatic 30\’ vertical shear drop of the rock formation, and a floating private realm which connects the sky to the earth in the vertical sky wells which slide through the second floor.

Beginning as a wall that emerges from the earth, the house steadily rises continuing the spiraling motion of approach and culminating in the entry courtyard. The continuous increase inherent to the space of the spiral finds itself here in the perspective foreshortening of both plan and section.
